The iPhone Duo went on sale on October 23. Within three days, owners were posting photos of cracked screens.

The reports started on Reddit and other forums over the launch weekend, and they all look similar. A crack runs down the hinge line on the inner display, mostly on the lower half, sometimes with a second crack running across it. Some owners say they felt the phone stick and heard a pop just before it happened. Others first noticed a line of bright pixels down one side of the screen.

Some of the stories are wild. One Australian buyer says their screen cracked about six hours after purchase, after being opened fewer than 20 times. A buyer in Texas says theirs cracked before they’d even finished setting it up. Tech leakers have counted at least 20 reported cases across Australia, the US and China.

One word of caution: Gizmodo and MacRumors both point out that some viral “cracked Duo” images are AI-generated. So not every photo you see is real.

Apple Breaks Its Silence

On October 26, Apple finally responded. In a statement to MacRumors, it said:

“We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units. If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement.”

That’s it. Apple didn’t say what’s causing it, how many phones are affected, or whether a fix is coming. It also told 9to5Mac that most units are not affected.

The good news is that Apple seems to be replacing affected phones for free. Both the Australian and Texas buyers got replacements on the spot. The bad news is that stock is tight, so some owners are waiting.

What’s Causing the iPhone Duo Screen Cracks?

Apple hasn’t said. But iFixit has a strong theory.

In its teardown, iFixit found that a lot of components meet at exactly the spot where the screens are cracking. Its hinge simulation points to a support bar that sits under the flexible screen. When you fold the phone, that bar is supposed to drop down to make room for the screen’s curve. If it doesn’t drop far enough, the screen can get pinched or dented right at the fold. That would explain the stuck feeling and the pop people describe.

To be clear, this is a hypothesis, not a confirmed cause. Nobody knows yet whether it’s a design flaw or a bad batch of units. If it’s a bad batch, replacements solve the problem. If it’s the design, as Gizmodo argues, swapping phones just resets the clock.

It’s worth remembering that before launch, MacRumors reported that the Duo’s hinge was struggling to meet Apple’s quality standards under heavy, repeated folding. Apple said it was sorted. Now we have hinge-line cracks in the first week.

How Much Does an iPhone Duo Screen Repair Cost?

If Apple decides your crack is a manufacturing fault, it’s covered free under warranty. If it decides it’s accidental damage, get ready for a shock. Here are Apple’s estimated out-of-warranty prices:

RepairWithout AppleCare+With AppleCare+
Inner (folding) display$999$99
Outer display$379$29
Back glass$199Not listed
Battery$229Free
Other damage$1,499Not listed

That’s half the price of the phone just for the inner screen. AppleCare+ costs $19.99 a month in the US. In the UK, the inner screen repair is £999, and Forbes notes that Samsung charges £594 for the Galaxy Z Fold 8’s inner screen.

The tricky part is who decides. Apple technicians judge whether a crack is a defect or damage, and Apple hasn’t explained how it tells a faulty fold from a dropped phone. If you’re affected, contact Apple early and keep a record of everything.

Is This Another Bendgate?

If you were around in 2014, you’ll remember Bendgate. Photos of bent iPhone 6 Plus units went viral within days of launch, and Apple said only nine customers had actually complained. The story became a meme anyway.

The Duo looks similar so far: a handful of real cases, a lot of viral photos (some of them fake), and Apple saying it’s a “small number” of units. But there’s one big difference. With Bendgate, the phones bent under pressure. Here, people say their screens cracked just from opening and closing the phone, which is exactly what it’s built to do.

So is it Bendgate 2.0? Not yet. Twenty-odd reports against a launch Counterpoint expects to reach about 6 million units this year is a small number. If the iFixit theory holds and the hinge is the problem, though, it could get a lot bigger.

The Price of Being Late

I said in my iPhone Duo review that Apple was seven years late to foldables. This is what that costs.

Samsung had its own disaster in 2019, when review units of the first Galaxy Fold broke within days and it had to delay the launch by months. Since then it has had eight generations to fix hinges, creases and screens, and millions of real users to learn from. Apple is learning those lessons now, live, on a $1,999 phone.

Remember, Apple’s hardware engineering VP Tom Marieb told TechRadar to “hold us accountable” on the crease. Well, here we are.

My take: if you already have a Duo, don’t panic, but don’t ignore anything odd either. A stuck hinge, a pop or a line of bright pixels means contacting Apple right away. If you haven’t bought one yet, I’d give it a few weeks. Let Apple figure out what’s going on and tell us whether it’s a bad batch or something bigger.

Have you seen any of these cracks yourself? Let me know in the comments.
